Composite Deck Builder in Cincinnati

Composite decking is the work we do most. A composite deck is a wood or steel frame with a capped composite walking surface on top, and almost everything that determines whether it looks right in ten years happens in the part you stop seeing once the boards go down.

We build across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, from a single level deck off a patio door to multi level structures with cascading steps, lighting and a covered section.

  • Trex and TimberTech board lines
  • Framing sized and spaced for the boards going on it
  • Aluminum, composite and cable railing
  • Permits and inspections handled

The frame decides how long the deck lasts

Composite boards are heavier and less forgiving than wood, and they need joist spacing set for the specific product and the direction the boards run. Boards laid on a diagonal need tighter spacing than boards laid square, and that is decided at framing, not when the decking arrives.

Footings go below the local frost line so the structure is not lifted by a winter of freeze and thaw, which Ohio delivers reliably every year. Ledger connections get flashed properly, because a ledger that sheds water into the rim joist behind it will rot the house rather than the deck.

Board layout is a design decision

A picture frame border hides every cut end and gives the deck a finished edge instead of a row of exposed board ends. It costs more in material and framing because the border needs blocking underneath it, and it is the single detail that most changes how a composite deck reads.

Inlays, contrasting borders and direction changes all need to be planned before the frame is built. We work these out at the design stage so the blocking is already there when the boards go on.

Hidden fasteners and movement

Most composite lines use hidden fasteners that clip into a groove in the board edge, so there are no screw heads in the walking surface. Composite also expands and contracts with temperature more than wood does, so gapping at butt joints and at the perimeter is set to the manufacturer's figures for the temperature on the day of install.

Common questions

How long does a composite deck take to build?

Most residential decks are a matter of days on site once materials are in hand, and the schedule depends far more on size, height and whether there are stairs and a covered section than on the decking itself. We give you a timeline with the proposal rather than a general figure.

Is composite decking worth it compared to wood?

Composite costs more up front and does not need sanding, staining or sealing. Wood costs less to install and needs re-finishing every couple of years to stay looking like it did on day one. Over the life of the deck most homeowners spend less on composite, and it is the reason it is now the majority of what we install.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Cincinnati?

Decks generally require a permit and inspection across Cincinnati and the surrounding jurisdictions, and the requirements vary between them. We handle the permit and the inspections as part of the project.

Can you build onto an existing patio or around a pool?

Yes. Both are common. A deck over an existing patio changes how the footings are set, and a pool deck changes the surface and railing choices, so both are worked out on the site visit.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, through Hearth. You can apply online and spread the cost over monthly payments rather than paying for the whole project up front.
