The detail that gets noticed

Deck Lighting in Cincinnati

Lighting is the cheapest thing on a deck that changes how it looks, and the most expensive thing to add once the boards are down. Lights set into stair risers, post caps and under the cap rail turn a deck into somewhere you sit in the evening rather than somewhere you stop using at dusk.

It is also a safety matter. Outdoor stairs in the dark are where people fall, and lit risers make every tread readable without floodlighting the yard.

  • Riser, post cap and under rail lighting
  • Low voltage, wired inside the structure
  • Dimmers and timers
  • Cheapest to fit during a build or resurface

Wire it during the build

Every light we fit is wired inside the frame, so there is no cable clipped to the outside of a post and no fitting screwed onto a finished surface. That is only possible while the boards are off.

If you are having a deck built or resurfaced, this is the moment to decide. The labour to run the wire is close to nothing when the structure is already open, and considerable afterwards. If you are not ready to commit to fittings, we can still run the wire and cap it for later.

Where the light goes

Riser lights are the ones people notice, and they do the most for safety. Post cap lights give the deck its outline after dark. Under rail strip lighting washes the deck surface without any visible source and is the quietest of the three.

The common mistake is too much of it. A deck lit like a car park is unpleasant to sit on. We aim for enough to see the steps and read the edges, on a dimmer, and let the rest of the yard stay dark.

Low voltage and control

Deck lighting runs on a low voltage transformer rather than line voltage, which keeps the wiring inside the structure straightforward and safe. A timer or photocell means it comes on at dusk without anyone thinking about it, and a dimmer is worth having because the right level in midsummer is not the right level in November.

Common questions

Can lighting be added to a deck I already have?

Yes, though it costs more than fitting it during a build because the wiring has to be routed through a finished structure. Riser lights are usually the most practical retrofit, since the stair risers can be worked on without lifting the deck surface.

Does deck lighting use much electricity?

No. These are low voltage LED fittings and the whole run typically draws less than a single household bulb.

Will the lights survive an Ohio winter?

Fittings made for deck use are sealed and rated for outdoor exposure, including freezing and snow. They are fitted so water drains away from them rather than pooling.

Can the lights be dimmed or put on a timer?

Yes to both, and we recommend both. A timer means it comes on at dusk on its own, and a dimmer lets you drop the level once the novelty wears off.
