Deck Builder in East Walnut Hills, Cincinnati

East Walnut Hills has some of the largest and oldest housing stock on the east side, much of it substantial brick and stone homes on sloping ground.

Work on these houses has to respect both the structure and the look of the building, and neither is a place for a generic deck.

Building a deck in East Walnut Hills

Attaching to masonry is not attaching to frame

A ledger into solid brick or stone is a different detail from a ledger into a wood rim, with different fixings and a different approach to keeping water out. Done casually it damages the wall. On many of these houses a freestanding deck is simply the better engineering answer.

Design that suits the building

A wide grey board and a heavy rail will fight a period brick elevation. Narrower boards, a slimmer baluster, restrained colour, and a deck height that does not cut across a window line will look intentional rather than bolted on.

Questions from East Walnut Hills homeowners

Can a deck be attached to a brick house?

Yes, with the right fixings and flashing for masonry, which is a different detail from a timber framed wall. On some of these houses we would recommend a freestanding structure instead and explain why.

Do older properties have extra approvals?

Some parts of the city carry additional design review on top of a building permit, and it varies street by street. We check what applies to your address before design work starts rather than after.
